Career Ready Tempe (AZ) is an eight-week paid summer internship for youth.

To help prepare and develop Tempe youth to participate in the future workforce, Career Ready Tempe is connecting youth to college and career readiness support and partnering with Tempe employers to provide paid summer internship opportunities. Career Ready Tempe is a collaboration with the City of Tempe Human Services Department, Economic Development Department and the Tempe Chamber of Commerce. The program is funded by City of Tempe Innovation Funds and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Career Readiness Lab grant. It has been strategically designed to align with industry needs and the initiatives of Achieve65Tempe, the City’s goal of 65 percent of Tempe’s adult population accessing post-secondary education, resulting in a certification to an advanced degree by 2030.

The program serves income-eligible Tempe youth who are in their incoming junior or senior year of high school. Internships are 15 hours a week and are compensated at a rate of $13/hour by Career Ready Tempe. Internships are set to begin on June 3rd and end by August 3rd (these dates can be slightly adjusted based on the needs of the business).

Students and businesses will complete an application to be selected for participation. Students will also participate in an interview to be matched with an internship host site.  To qualify to serve as an Internship Host Site, businesses must be located within the Tempe city boundaries.

Admitted students will be prepared to work in a professional setting by means of quality soft skills training programs. Interns will take 6 online soft skills training courses through Arizona State University’s Edge program in the areas of customer service, leadership, and personal development. Interns are required, by the program, to complete modules titled Time Management, Customer Service, and Communication Etiquette. Employers with whom they are matched will have the opportunity to select 3 additional modules for interns to complete prior to beginning an internship with their company. Interns will also receive in-person training from Arizona@Work.

Businesses will determine meaningful projects and tasks related to Advanced Business Services  for interns to perform and have the option to participate in the interview process. Businesses will also designate an on-site supervisor who will be responsible for assigning projects, signing off on timesheets, and orienting the intern(s) to the workplace.

City staff will monitor and coordinate with interns/businesses throughout the process to ensure smooth implementation.
