May is Mental Health Awareness Month.  There is federal support – the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, provides federal resources.  SAMHSA leads public health efforts to advance the behavioral health of the nation.  A sample of SAMHSA’s resources are listed including a 24/7/365 referral and information service.

Mental and substance use disorders affect people of every demographic.  According to SAMHSA’s 2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, there are approximately 47.6 million (19.1%) Americans with some form of mental illness.  In the past year, 20.3 million adults (7.4%) had a substance use disorder. Out of this population, there are 7.9 million people with both a mental disorder and a substance use disorder.  This is known as co-occurring mental and substance use disorders.
